Navigating career choices and building a confident start.
When this client walked into my session, he looked mildly annoyed.
“My wife keeps nagging about leaving socks on the floor,” he said.
“Must’ve done it once or twice. Why make it such a big deal?”
Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? The classic loop in so many households:
->She’s “always nagging.”
->He’s “not sure what the fuss is about.”
But conversations about socks are almost never about socks.
He told me he didn’t think he needed coaching.HR had sent him, and he didn’t understand why. So naturally, his first line to me was, “I don’t even know what I’m doing here.”
So I asked him one question:“What is it that you don’t want to work on?”
That changed everything.
What began as a resistant, arms-folded session slowly unfolded into honest reflection.
The sock incident? It turned out to be about communication.
About how he listened.
How he responded.
How present he was in moments that mattered.
He came back for the next session. And the next.
And here’s what that reminded me: Most people don’t think they need life coaching…until they finally get the space to hear themselves.
Because life coaching isn’t about fixing problems. It’s about uncovering the patterns we’ve avoided, minimised, or laughed off for years.
Sometimes, all it takes is a pair of socks on the floor to start the real conversation.
If a small moment has been repeating itself in your life too, maybe it’s time to look inward.
Every month, I send reflections, stories, and simple tools to help you slow down, hear yourself, and move with quiet confidence. A mindful moment delivered to your inbox each month
