She was strong, capable, and deeply grounded in who she was. A promotion was on the horizon—a big one. But with it came an unspoken expectation: She need to be more assertive.

And that’s where the conflict began. If she softened her leadership style, it felt fake. If she stayed as she was, she worried she’d be perceived as harsh. Would her team trust her? Would they feel safe around her? Would they follow her? These are the questions so many leaders ask but rarely voice.

Now, business coaching isn’t about giving answers. It’s about helping you organise the truths you already hold.

So when she asked herself, “Should I be more authentic and risk being ‘too much’…or fit in and lose a part of myself?”, I knew we needed to explore both sides.

“What does it feel like to lead as yourself?” I asked. “Empowering,” she said. She wanted to give her team autonomy. Treat them as equals. Maintain healthy boundaries and lead with clarity.

“And the alternative? That feels like wearing a mask,” she admitted. She feared losing control, being seen as a pushover; she feared diluting her identity.

So I asked, “Is there a way to stay in control and stay true to yourself?”
After a pause, she said, “If I can listen, ask questions, and guide instead of always answering…
my team will feel empowered. And I’ll feel grounded.”

Not nice. Not rude. But kind.

Kind is honest. Kind respects boundaries. Kind holds people capable without losing authority.

Her leadership didn’t need a makeover. It needed alignment.

And if you’re navigating a similar shift, I want you to remember: Leadership isn’t a performance. It’s an evolution: one honest conversation at a time.

Found this helpful? This might be the reminder you needed to step into your next chapter.

What if the real argument at home isn’t about socks on the floor at all? https://goldieuttam.com/what-if-the-real-argument-at-home-isnt-about-socks-on-the-floor-at-all/ https://goldieuttam.com/what-if-the-real-argument-at-home-isnt-about-socks-on-the-floor-at-all/#respond Thu, 20 Nov 2025 13:16:28 +0000 https://goldieuttam.eu/?p=636 Navigating career choices and building a confident start.

When this client walked into my session, he looked mildly annoyed.

“My wife keeps nagging about leaving socks on the floor,” he said.

“Must’ve done it once or twice. Why make it such a big deal?”

Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? The classic loop in so many households:

->She’s “always nagging.”

->He’s “not sure what the fuss is about.”

But conversations about socks are almost never about socks.

He told me he didn’t think he needed coaching.HR had sent him, and he didn’t understand why. So naturally, his first line to me was, “I don’t even know what I’m doing here.”

So I asked him one question:“What is it that you don’t want to work on?”

That changed everything.

What began as a resistant, arms-folded session slowly unfolded into honest reflection.

The sock incident? It turned out to be about communication.

About how he listened.

How he responded.

How present he was in moments that mattered.

He came back for the next session. And the next.

And here’s what that reminded me: Most people don’t think they need life coaching…until they finally get the space to hear themselves.

Because life coaching isn’t about fixing problems. It’s about uncovering the patterns we’ve avoided, minimised, or laughed off for years.

Sometimes, all it takes is a pair of socks on the floor to start the real conversation.

If a small moment has been repeating itself in your life too, maybe it’s time to look inward.

When Anu* came to me, she said she wanted to “work on her communication.”

She was leading a team, taking on bigger responsibilities, and wanted to be more assertive when she communicated expectations.

Naturally, she began where many people do: her language.

She told me she had studied in a Marathi-medium school, and that unlike her British colleagues, her English “wasn’t polished enough.”

As she spoke, her sentences were clear. Her thoughts were structured. Her intention was sharp.

So I mirrored that back to her. “I understand you perfectly,” I said.

She smiled gently and replied, “Because you’re Indian. You get what I mean.”

So I asked her, “What does me being Indian have to do with how well I understand you?”

She paused.Then said softly,

“You don’t judge my English.”

It wasn’t about grammar anymore. “So you feel your colleagues judge your English?” I asked.

She exhaled deeply. “You know, Goldie,I’m tired of worrying how they’ll react… every time I have to make an ask.”

Slowly, the real issue revealed itself. It was not language, but fear.

Fear of being misinterpreted.

Fear of being disliked.

Fear of being judged for simply doing her job.

“You started with English,” I said to her. “But now you’re speaking about their reactions. What changed?”

She thought for a moment.

“To be assertive, I need to focus on the message… not how it lands.

But I keep worrying a team member might complain to my manager.

I realise… I still care too much about being in everyone’s good books.”

And there it was: her core belief. A value shaped in childhood, reinforced through culture, and now spilling into her leadership.

Our session ended with a quiet but powerful awareness: That sometimes, what we call a “communication issue” is actually a belief asking to be rewritten.
And this is only the beginning of her work.

If you’re curious about what beliefs might be shaping your leadership, consider this your gentle nudge to explore deeper.

The Coaching Journey That Changed David and Me https://goldieuttam.com/the-coaching-journey-that-changed-david-and-me/ https://goldieuttam.com/the-coaching-journey-that-changed-david-and-me/#respond Tue, 18 Nov 2025 05:18:06 +0000 https://goldieuttam.eu/?p=303 Picture this: You’ve worked 10+ years in corporate. Worked really hard to get where you are. You know your craft, you know your goals and yet somehow, your team doesn’t feel led; they feel managed.

That’s where David found himself when he came to me.

So when David had his first coaching session with me, he wasn’t failing. He was driven, articulate, and ambitious. But he couldn’t understand why his leadership felt lonely. His team avoided honest conversations. He felt frustrated by their lack of initiative. His manager, seeing both his potential and his struggle, suggested coaching.

And he was critical, pretty unsure of coaching, to be very honest.

So, in our first few sessions, David was firm in his beliefs–structured, logical, focused on performance.

But emotions? Those did not have a seat at his table.

So that’s where we began: with emotional literacy—the skill of naming, understanding, and listening to one’s own inner dialogue. Slowly, David started to see that the conflict he faced with others was really a reflection of the conflict he avoided within himself.

The moment he learned to listen inward, he began to hear outward. He shifted from commanding authority to communicating clarity. From fear-based control to trust-based leadership.

We worked on feedback and then eventually on feedforward: how to speak in ways that opened possibilities instead of closing conversations. Soon, David’s team stopped fearing him. They began respecting him not because they had to, but because they wanted to. Trust me this was no overnight feat. This came after months of back and forth.

But the real transformation didn’t end there. Many many years later, David called me again—this time with a simple request:
“I’d like you to start coaching my son.”

Because the lessons that helped him lead at work had reshaped the way he showed up as a father. He had discovered the essence of true leadership that before you can lead anyone else, you must first lead yourself. And if that isn’t proof how transformational coaching can be, I don’t know what is!

Let this be your first step towards figuring out if coaching is for you.

What happens when your teenager struggles with an identity crisis? https://goldieuttam.com/what-happens-when-your-teenager-struggles-with-an-identity-crisis/ https://goldieuttam.com/what-happens-when-your-teenager-struggles-with-an-identity-crisis/#respond Thu, 09 Oct 2025 06:53:26 +0000 https://goldieuttam.eu/?p=1 When Michele* first met me, she was 14. a bright young girl who had just moved from Lebanon to Barcelona.

Her mother sensed what Michele herself couldn’t yet articulate: that amidst the new culture, new school, and new language, she was also facing an inner shift: one of identity and self-esteem.

Now, Michele was, by all means, a high achiever. Her grades were impeccable. Her dreams were crystal clear: Harvard Medical School. But beneath that confidence lived a quiet tension: the pressure to live up to her own expectations, and the fear that if she ever fell short, it would mean she wasn’t enough.

We began with something simple yet powerful—presence.

How she entered a room.

How she held her posture, used her voice, and met people’s eyes.

Bit by bit, these small external shifts began to shape her internal world too. People noticed her differently, and she began to notice herself differently.

Her love for piano, swimming, and reading became more than just hobbies. They became reminders that joy and achievement could coexist.
But the most transformative work happened when we explored her belief about being “socially awkward.” For years, Michele saw her introversion as a flaw. Together, we reframed it as her quiet strength: a part of her identity to be embraced, not fixed.

By the time Michele was ready to apply for university, a new challenge awaited: learning to accept her imperfections. She prepared meticulously for her exams, interviews, for the possibility of rejection. But somewhere along the way, she discovered something greater than Harvard: Her own definition of excellence—one rooted not in perfection, but in authenticity.

When it came time to choose, Michele made a decision that reflected this newfound sense of self. She chose the University of Toronto. Not because it was safer or easier, but because it felt right for her.

The child who once walked into my sessions uncertain and self-critical now stands as a young woman who lives independently, studies medicine, and defines success on her own terms.
